Raden Umar Said Vocational School students\' skills in the field of animation deserves to be given two thumbs up. SMK students Raden Umar Said can produce animated films that are used by the industry in foreign countries. Moreover, the students at RUS Vocational School have access to a school with international, modern quality facilities where they are able to practice their skills.
“We are very much aware that creative industry is growing rapidly and needed the human resources. The challenge is how we prepare the human resources from not only the creative industry but from all industries. The focus is on the tourism industry, creative economy, and manufacturing. The highest human resource demands came from the creative industry”, said Primadi Serad as the Program Director of Bakti Pendidikan Djarum Foundation in Jakarta.
To prepare skilled workers, Djarum Foundation collaborates with several Vocational Schools from animation, film, fashion, game development and user interface/user experience departments. Djarum Foundation have been working with several Vocational Schools from 2011, and began to enter the creative industry since 2015.
One of the schools fostered by the Djarum Foundation is Raden Umar Said Vocational School which is located in Kudus, Central Java. Now, Raden Umar Said Vocational School owns an animation studio called RUS Animation Studio with advanced, sophisticated facilities nd equipment that resembles the likes of Disney and Pixar. To ensure the quality of teaching, RUS Vocational School together with Djarum Foundation brought in foreign instructors with experience in the animation industry.
Some of the facilities that are available at RUS Animation Studio are Drawing Studio, Production Studio, Visual Effect Studio, Color Grading Studio, Sound Studio, Mini Theatre, Motion Capture Studio, and Art Studio. The facilities such as existing software at RUS Vocational School are designed with help from the industry. With these industry standardized facilities, students who start studying at 7 in the morning can feel at home until 10 pm.
Primadi explained that at the beginning of its establishment, the animation studio accepted 25 students from 25 registrants. "Those who registered are accepted. Because of its status as a vocational high schools, our focus is on middle and lower class students who don\'t have money for college. We think about how they can directly work after graduating and help their parents. We focus on majors where they can work and earn more income from scholars", he said.
According to Primadi, the first thing he did when working on this project was to review the school’s curriculum. "We are collaborating with the industry, (compiling) the curriculum. Next, the most difficult thing is to train teachers because we don\'t train students directly. The teacher is the teacher. It takes about a year to ascertain whether the teacher can teach or not", he added.
"Next, the infrastructure must be adequate to what the industry needs. Then there are scholarships and finally they (students) must make something that is sold in the industry’s market to ensure that what is learned is truly appreciated by the industry, " Primadi said.
The curriculum at SMK Raden Umar Said is determined solely by students under the direction of Djarum Foundation and the school. Given the lengthy process of animation, students can choose material that suits their interests. In the second year, students will have more internships at the company than at school.
In contrast to schools in general, students of SMK Raden Umar Said do not study in a typical classroom but rather in a free and open place. The class concept is unique and fun with the hopes of stimulating the students’ creativity.

SMK students Raden Umar Said can produce animated films that are used by the industry in foreign countries.
In this era, animation is one of the most demanding industry, as there are lots of animation demands for entertainment tools such as movies in the cinema and television, promotion, and branding in various global companies.
This year, Indonesia, as the center of the biggest animation creative industry in Southeast Asia, is demanded to be able to provide a creative workforce of animation. Garin Nugroho worked on the first 3D animation in Indonesia in GangsarWaskito studio (2004).
Gangsar Waskito immediately went viral and prompted many requests to create a similar animation. This has encouraged the rise of animation schools, such as Hello Motion Academy which was founded by Wahyu Aditya in 2004. Aditya has a long list of experience in the animation world, organizing the Hello Fest event, which is immediately claimed to be the benchmark for the development of animation in Indonesia.
Next, another Animation Academy was founded in 2011 in Surabaya, with various study programs such as graphic design, product design, interior design, multimedia software, and animation. Not wanting to lose, PT. Telkom Tbk founded an animation school through the Indigo Fellowship program. There are several classes, each classes consisting of four students with one mentor. They didn\'t only learn about animation, but learn how to be an entrepreneur in the creative industry. Andre Surya, one of Digital Artists of Indonesia who was once involved in the Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) for Lucas Film Singapore program was a mentor for this program. Espire School of Digital Art (ESDA) consists of 2D Digital Painting, 3D Fundamental Course, and 3D Animations.
Back then, the International Design School (IDS) was founded in 1999. It is the first animation academy in Indonesia. This academy offers advanced college, bachelor programs, and holiday programs. During the holiday, students are asked to attend CBC or Creative Boot Camp, by learning about animation, design, and film.
However, not all animation schools located in Jakarta. There is also a Vocational School in Kudus, Raden Umar Said Vocational School which was founded in 2015 with financial support from Djarum Foundation, as a part of its CSR program.
They didn’t build the school but rather supported them in the form of funds and animation equipment, as they’ve done with a lot of other Vocational Schools in Kudus and its surrounding areas.
Specifically for Animation Vocational School, the equipment costed Rp 30 billion in total, as they are advanced animation equipment used by animation schools in Singapore, Philippines, and Japan.
Through a rigorous entrance test, 26 talented children were selected to become animation operators. In three years, 25 students graduated, 18 of them immediately worked in Kudus and other surrounding cities in Java. By 18 years old, they’ve worked with Astra Toyota, BCA and cartoon film producers in Singapore and Malaysia.
Upin & Ipin is the most popular animated film in a local Indonesian TV station, MNC TV. The production was made by RUS Vocational School graduates. Upin & Ipin are interesting cases. The production costs per episode is roughly around Rp 2 Billion. Nevertheless, this program aired on an Indonesian TV station for Rp 40 Million. Why it is so cheap? Because the government gave a 50% subsidy for each episode, meanwhile 30% of them were supported by Upin &Ipin merchandise sales such as dolls, text books images, school bags, and t-shirts. Thus, the producers only pay 10% of all productions costs of Upin&Ipin’s animated film. Upin & Ipin aired in 12 different Asian and African countries.
The sponsors not only helped the Animation Vocational School, but also other vocational schools such as Engineering Vocational School, Maritime Vocational School, Culinary Vocational School, and Fashion Vocational School. The most desired after graduates are from the Department of Engineering, as an average of 95% of all students got a job within three months before their final exam and received an average salary nine times the minimum wage.
Fashion Graduates are also in high demandas their students are not only taught about sewing, but they were also taught to design fashion and they are figuring out what design trends will hit within the next two to three years.
The graduates are then sent to many countries including Japan, Hongkong, and Malaysia. The last achievement was when the Fashion Vocational School sent its graduates to France. Two of them are the fashion designers and the other two were make-up artists. For a week in a prestigious fashion show in France, they worked as fashion designers and makeup artists. The models who appeared on the show were very satisfied with their services.
Supporting Vocational Schools in Indonesia is the right choice. There are 14.000 Vocational Schools in Indonesia, but the majority of them only train and provide basic skills, especially in agriculture and animal husbandry.
What they did in Kudus is more about the efforts of its graduates to have a better resume and thus are immediately able to enter the workforce upon graduation. For example, in the Maritime Department, the graduates can immediately work or even become a captain for smaller vessels <5.000 DWT. To work for bigger vessels, they will needa two-year working experience as an able-bodied seaman plus a six-month short course. After that, they willbe promoted to thirdofficer and could work on ships> 5,000 DWT.
Another example is the Fashion Vocational Schools. They have the skills and capacities to become a fashion designer. At the moment, modest wear is on-trend –polite clothes for women. Big brands such as Valentino, Prada, Louis Vuitton have produced this modest wear for the largest scale. Indonesia being a majority Muslim country have the potential to becomethe “Mecca” of Muslim fashion in the world.
The graduates of the Fashion Department will become a pioneer in developing Indonesia as the center of Muslim fashion in the world. Bukalapak, Blibli, and other various online markets have facilitated the sales of Muslim fashion in many countries.
In 2017, at the Sakura Collection Asian Student Awards 2018 held a Competition. From 100 finalists, Nahdatul Ulama BANAT Vocational School succeeded in taking the 1st place with Nia Faradiska who showed her collection themed “Koinobori”. From the same school, Farah Aurellia succeeded to become the runner-up with her collection “Kyoto”. Nia Faradiska seized the opportunity to travel to Japan for an internship at Bunka Fashion College; the sixth-best fashion school in the world.
The leading Vocational Schools have been changed into Specialized Vocational Schools that are adjusted for market needs such as Fashion, Engineering, Gas Pipe, Culinary, Robotic, and Beauty & Spa Vocational School with the hopes of breaking through the scarcity of middle-class skilled workers required by Indonesia for the next 5 to 10 years ahead.
There are 14.000 Vocational Schools in Indonesia. Big companies are needed to help in the form of practice equipment, high quality teachers, and networks to work in skilled markets in various types of businesses. In the end, the company will enjoy fulfilling the skilled labor demanded in the job markets.

Raden Umar Said (RUS) Vocational School in Kudus City, Central Java is attracting attention. The school applies modern facilities and curriculum like those of International schools. It’s No wonder that RUS Vocational School became a role-model to other Vocational Schools throughout Indonesia.
The TV program ‘Kick Andy’ had the opportunity to visit RUS. It appears that this school is indeed different from other schools in Indonesia.
For example, there is a classroom with a VW Combi. The car is used by guidance counselors to provide counseling to students with problems. There is also an upside down Volkswagen Beetle with a PlayStation 4 console installed. Here, students can relax and play video games.
According to Roy, the Technical Director of Raden Umar Said Vocational School, this school was founded in 2005, with the help of CSR funds from Djarum Foundation. Meanwhile, the department of Animation, DKV, and RPL were available in 2015. These three majors accommodate 300 students.
“The students in this school come from various regions, but there is a quota of 70 percent for Kudus residents”, said Roy.
The curriculum of this school applies 70% of the practice, so students are accustomed to being encouraged to hone their skills and produce works. Hopefully, one day after graduation they can immediately apply their knowledge and help contribute to their family’s economy.
The department of Animation at RUS Vocational School is among the most interesting. This department carries a different class concept. The classroom design adapts to a comfortable playground, gaming facilities, and sports. The animation studio is also set accordingly to industry standards and is the largest in Indonesia.
Students are directly involved in making animation projects. They have already received orders from Singapore, Canada, and the United States for various animation projects.
One student with an outstanding achievement is Andim. This RUS Animation graduate is extremely diligent. Due to his talent, Djarum Foundation sent Andim to Singapore for 3 weeks to study directly with Warren Eagles, a color-grading artist from Hollywood.

Vocational education has become the most relevant solution to overcome unemployment problems while also growing the domestic industry at the same time. Therefore, Djarum Foundation is currently focusing on improving the quality of vocational schools, especially in Kudus, Central Java, where Djarum factory exists.
Primadi H. Serad, Program Director of Djarum Foundation’s “Bakti Pendidikan”, said that they have education programs for a better teacher and school quality to generate highly valued students. “We have conducted training in 18 vocational high schools aimed to improve the quality of skilled workers in Indonesia. Thus, they will be ready to enter the workplace,” said Primadi H. Serad in Kudus, Wednesday (25/9/2018).
The program starts with aligning the school curriculum and industry demands. Hence, Djarum Foundation involves professionals to ensure the conformity between those two. In further, Djarum Foundation trains teachers and provides certification that meets the industry standards.
Industry-standard facilities are also required to minimize the gap between what they learn in school and what they will experience later in their workplace. ‘Teaching factory’ was established to prepare students in accomplishing the actual work given by industry to schools, by working in according to the customer demands.
However, there were challenges in executing the program in Kudus. “Because our program principle is qualified schools and teachers, we find difficulties to get teachers who have certain competencies, principals who have adequate leadership skills, and proficient student input,” Primadi H. Serad continued.
Djarum Foundation plans to go elsewhere with other studies and expertise. There are four fields of study to prepare for next year, with 20 different skills.
This education program initiative has started since 1963 by building schools in Kudus. Furthermore, the quality improvement of vocational high schools began in 2011. Until 2018, there are 16 competencies from 4 field of expertise that have been adjusted to produce competitive graduates. It is expected to meet the needs of labors in Indonesia and international.

“The curriculum remains the same, but for students who still want to deepen the animation, the school will give time for them so that they can use the lab to the maximum. Moreover, our school providesabove average facilities”, he explained.
He hopes with all of the system and support facilities, students can maximize their potential and feel comfortable to learn. According to Roni, the style of learning by listening to the teacher who talks in front of the class is a rigid system.

Regarding students who often come home late at night, Roni confirmed this.
“Most (go home) at 21:00. Here, the atmosphere is made to enjoy. There are also support facilities such as gym for sports, places to hang out, and also for expressions. It’s designed unlike a school, but rather a hotel lobby” said Roni.
In Kudus itself, a modern school like RUS Vocational School is not the first. There are many Vocational Schools that applies the same concept.

This prime animated film is a 25-minute film made by 38 students from the 10th and 11th-grade at RUS Vocational School, Kudus, Central Java.
The technical advisor of RUS Animation Studio, Daniel Harjanto said the initial purpose of filmmaking was as a learning and practice tool for students to apply their knowledge which they got from school to become valuable work of arts.
Beside that, according to Daniel, the students of RUS Vocational School are able to understand and work on all production stages from pre-production, production to post-production.
“The work of RUS Vocational School’s students is a very far leap which shows that Indonesian youths are full of potential”, Said Daniel Harjanto in Pasoa and the Brave press conference at CGV Blitz, Grand Indonesia.
Daniel continued, “The process of making a 3D animated film is a very complicated production and requires high expertise”.
“Pasoa and the Brave have gone through a fairly long production process and the results are satisfying”, said Daniel.
He admitted, the film was no lesser than the animation products made by professional studios. RUS Animation Studio also used the same tools and software used in animated films abroad.
“Walt Disney and Pixar are using the same software as the filming of Pasoa and the Brave” added Daniel.
Regarding the creative industry, Daniel added, the collaboration between the industrial world and education is needed to build competent human resources in Indonesia, so it could become a source of production in the field.
Pasoa and the Brave tells a story about local wisdom in Indonesian culture where Pasoa is a mythological animal whose duty is to protect the biological wealth in the forest from the onslaught of building empires in the Area.
Pasoa struggled to defend their habitat with other young characters named Amet Mude, Karun, Sang Penyumpit, and Punai Anai.
The moral of the storyis about the importance of protecting the balance of Indonesia’s natural resources while introducing the wealth of traditional tales to Indonesian people.
In collaboration with Djarum Foundation, this 3D animation film attracts a number of artists to fill in songs and sounds. The vocalist of Changcuters Band, Tria was the voice-over for Amet Mude’s character.
“I was really interested when I got the offer to voice Amet Mude’s character. During the process I was very happy” said Tria after the release of Pasoa and the Brave film.
He explained, to do a voice-over in an animated film wasn’t easy. It was more difficult than role-playing in a real film.
Besides Tria, a senior actor, TioPakusodewo also voiced the character for the King. The Rising Singer, Isyana Sarasvati also participated as a singer and composer for the soundtrack film titled Gema Alam Raya.

These struggles were also experienced by Muslikin, a graduate of RUS Vocational School. He was in charge of making various shapes of trees that appeared in Pasoa and the Brave film. At a glance, it might look simple.

“I’m proud to be a part of this Indonesian youth’s animated film project, Pasoa and the Brave, as a composer of this movie’s soundtrack,” wrote Isyana on her official Instagram account.
“Our purpose for this film is so that students are familiar with the production process of an animated film. Whether it will be aired in cinema, TV station, or Youtube is another matter. For now, the production process is at 60 percent. Hopefully, it will be completed by November 2016” said Daniel.
